Ptosis Repair
Report
Ptosis, or drooping of the upper eyelid, is caused by the gradual stretching or weakening of the muscles that raise the upper eyelid.
In some cases, ptosis is congenital, where children are born with weakened eyelid muscles.
The most common form of ptosis occurs with natural aging and creates a tired appearance.
Ptosis repair is intended to provide a more youthful, vibrant appearance, and importantly to expand one's field of vision.
Some patients with ptosis also have excess skin and fat in the upper eyelid, which is often corrected at the same time as ptosis surgery.
Direct Brow Lift
Report
As we age, the eyebrows can descend below their more youthful position.
In some cases, the lowered eyebrows can impair vision, or make it difficult to open the eyes.
Three factors affect drooping of the upper lids: lowering of the lid margin (true ptosis); excess tissue between the eyebrows and eye lashes (dermatochalasis); and dropping of the eyebrows (brow ptosis).
These distinctions are important in that each problem is addressed with a different surgical procedure or technique.
Surgery is performed in an outpatient setting; patients are able to go home directly following their procedure.
Endoscopic Tear Duct Surgery
Report
When the nasolacrimal (tear) duct becomes obstructed, a dacryocstorhinostomy (DCR) is often indicated.
The primary goal of the surgery is to provide a pathway for tear drainage from the eye to the inside of the nose.
The tear duct can be opened either endoscopically through the nose, or by an 'open' DCR which accesses the duct obstruction by making an incision along the nose.
Dr. Baylin performs an endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
The endoscopic approach leaves no scars on the face like those of conventional open DCR which can also address possible intranasal problems that might lead to failure of the surgery.
Orbital Tumors & Fractures
Report
The orbit is a series of bones that comprise the eye socket.
Orbital fractures can result from trauma and may require surgical repair if accompanied by double vision, difficulty seeing, or deformity.
Such surgery may involve exploration of the area to determine the full extent of the injury and implantation of various materials to rebuild and reinforce the wall of the orbit.
Often times with an orbital trauma, the eyelid may have an injury that requires surgical repair as well.
If coming for evaluation of a fracture, it is important to bring all X-Rays and scans so that they can help guide the surgical plan if needed.
