Having a family history of macular degeneration increases your risk of developing the disease. There are two main stages of macular degeneration, commonly referred to as "dry" and "wet". Certain eye vitamins have been shown to reduce the risk of progression of the disease. If you develop wet macular degeneration, injections of medications can be extremely effective in not only stabilizing the vision, but in improving it as well.

Advancements in lens technology have made many new contact lenses available. The latest lenses are thin, moist, and comfortable. This can result in significant vision loss and pain. Several conditions may require a corneal transplant. You and your ophthalmologist can decide what is best for your situation. Corneal transplants are the most commonly performed transplant surgery and have an excellent success rate. The surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis.

Retinal detachment, retinal artery occlusion, and retinal vein occlusion are all common conditions that can cause a loss of vision.
