Entropion is the medical term used to describe an inward turning of the eyelid and eyelashes.
The skin and eyelashes of the lower eyelid rub against the cornea (front part of the eye) and conjunctiva (membrane lining of the eye) and can cause redness, excessive tearing, eye irritation, eyelid crusting, mucous discharge, cornea abrasions, and possibly impaired vision.
The most common cause of entropion is laxity in the tissues of the eyelid as a result of aging.
Other less common causes of entropion can be contraction of the tissues on the inner surface of the eyelid from inflammation or chemical/thermal burns.
Essential blepharospasm is a debilitating disorder of progressive involuntary spasms of the eyelid muscles.
Other muscles of the face and neck may also be involved.
Essential blepharospasm typically begins when the patient notices an increase in blinking or squinting with a progression towards repetitive forceful closure and difficulty in opening the eyelids.
Blepharospasm is more common in women and typically has its onset in the fifth to sixth decade.
Most medications have limited efficacy in treating blepharospasm.
Growths, lesions and tumors that commonly occur around the eyes are particularly troubling for patients, as well as for doctors not trained to handle the complexities associated with the eye and eyelids.
Dr. Selem's unique training and experience allows him to remove and cosmetically reconstruct both benign and malignant conditions that occur on or around the eye.
Dr. Selem is regularly referred to patients from dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and other plastic surgeons to treat these troubling lesions.
Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of blindness in people younger than 65 years of age and one of the leading causes of permanent decreased vision.
An estimated 41 million people in the United States alone-40% of whom are adults ranging in age from 40 to 74 years-have "pre-diabetes, " a condition that significantly increases their risk of developing diabetes.
It's extremely important for you to take steps to help prevent the development of this disease.
You can try to avoid the problems associated with diabetes mellitus, including those that affect the eyes, by managing your diabetes well.
